MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor says SpaceX is exploring the merits of placing Bitcoin on its balance sheet.

Saylor tells Dr. Saifedean Ammous that representatives from SpaceX were among 7,000 companies represented at MicroStrategy’s recent Bitcoin summit, which the business intelligence firm hosted to help companies that are interested in buying BTC as a treasury asset.

“We had people from SpaceX there. We had people [from] some of Elon Musk’s companies. We had people from Marathon there. The ones you would expect were there, but of course there’s an avalanche of private companies, and there were a decent number of public companies and treasurers and CFOs that were lurking. Some don’t want to have their names mentioned, as you can imagine, because it’s a sensitive topic.”

Elon Musk is the chief executive of both the space transportation services company SpaceX and the electric car giant Tesla.

Tesla made waves earlier this month after purchasing $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin.

Saylor says he believes Bitcoin can save companies from future inflation and allow them to plug into a revolutionary and superior monetary network.

The MicroStrategy CEO also believes the cryptocurrency could rise above expectations and “be a hundred times bigger than Google or Facebook.”

DeFi will provide good regulatory test for SEC, says Commissioner Peirce

Hester Peirce, the commissioner for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission known by the nickname “Crypto Mom,” welcomes the challenge of regulating decentralized finance.

In a speech for a George Washington University Law School event on the digital economy, Peirce said decentralized finance, or DeFi, could be the alternative legacy financial system many are seeking given the surge in anti-Wall Street sentiment surrounding the short squeeze of GameStop stocks. The SEC commissioner said the technology could provide a “very good test” for the regulatory body in protecting investors and markets.

“Although a work in progress with all the growing pains and rough edges that implies, DeFi’s promises of democratization, open access, transparency, predictability and systemic resilience are alluring,” said Peirce. “We regulators, mindful of the potential upsides and downsides, need to provide both legal clarity and the freedom to experiment so that DeFi can compete with CeFi…

Crossing the crypto chasm: Paving the way to mass adoption

Since its inception in 2009, cryptocurrency has become both a cultural and financial phenomenon. As news headlines tout its ever-increasing exchange values and disruptive potential, investors and banking experts have gone into a frenzy. And yet, while digital money is on a lot of people’s minds, there is still a lack of understanding about what it is and what it can do among mainstream consumers.

This is because cryptocurrency is a discontinuous or disruptive innovation, and its adoption demands significant consumer behavior changes and the infrastructure of supporting businesses. In order to succeed and get closer to the point of mass adoption, cryptocurrency as a product needs to create a bandwagon effect and build momentum so that it becomes a de-facto standard. This process is called a technology adoption lifecycle, and media plays an essential role in it. The crypto industry needs a marketing model that can effectively publicize its…

Bitwise assets under management hit $1B, fueled by professional investors

Bitwise, a leading cryptocurrency fund manager, reported another major milestone on Tuesday as the assets under management for its digital asset funds crossed $1 billion for the first time.

The Bitwise 10 Crypto Index Fund, which provides diversified exposure to Bitcoin (BTC) and other leading cryptocurrencies, accounts for over 90% of the total AUM.

Hunter Horsely, Bitwise’s CEO, said the crypto industry is at a “turning point” with respect to adoption. He explained:

“We’re seeing accelerating demand from professional investors and financial advisors for exposure to crypto. […] Professional investors value index funds because they provide exposure while delivering peace of mind that the strategy will be managed and rebalanced as the category evolves.”

1 billion people will store life savings on their phone in Bitcoin by 2026 — MicroStrategy CEO

Bitcoin (BTC) will be the savings method of choice for one billion people on their phones by 2026, MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor predicts.

In an interview with CNBC on Feb. 23, Saylor, whose company owns in excess of 70,000 BTC, continued his public Bitcoin advocacy, calling it “the dominant digital monetary network.”

Saylor: Billions will choose Bitcoin for savings

Saylor was speaking a day after U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen described Bitcoin as “inefficient,” comments which accompanied a price dip of over 20% from all-time highs of $58,300.

For him, however, he comments were of little consequence compared to the broader Bitcoin use case quickly encroaching into more and more people’s financial lives.

“The story here that’s not being told is that Bitcoin is egalitarian progressive technology,” he told CNBC’s Squawk Box segment.

“We’re going to see a day when 7-8 billion people have a bar of digital gold…

The United Arab Emirates chase crypto and blockchain adoption

For a long time, the United Arab Emirates has been one of the most progressive crypto countries in the world. For example, government-owned licensing firm Kiklabb allows clients to pay for their visa and trade license fees via various digital assets to the Dubai Financial Services Authority, which announced its decision to work on a holistic crypto regulatory framework as part of its 2021 business plan.

In fact, as a result of Dubai’s crypto-friendly policies, Ripple, a firm that has recently been in murky waters with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, announced its decision to open an office in the region. Furthermore, the UAE and Saudi Arabia are reportedly working on a joint central bank digital currency research initiative that has been dubbed “Project Aber.”

Commenting on why the UAE is fast becoming the destination of choice for some crypto/blockchain startups, Mazdak Rafaty, managing partner…
