Central Bank Digital Currencies May Drive Cash ‘Shadow Economy’ to Crypto: Reuters

Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) may signal the end of physical cash and thus propel interest in cryptocurrency from the darker side of society, according to Mike Dolan, editor-at-large for finance and markets at Reuters.

“Shadow economy” participants, those who use deal mostly in hard cash, are unlikely to be drawn to using a CBDC, which may make it harder to stay anonymous, Dolan argues in his column for the news agency.

Dolan suggests that even bitcoin cannot guarantee completely anonymity as coins can be traced from wallet to wallet, so it is unlikely that “legal tender tokens” could be relied on either.

The “shadow economy,” as described by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is an ecosystem of consumers and business owners who rely mostly on cash to avoid taxation and regulatory oversight.

This can include everything from sole traders to organized crime, and could be worth more than €2 trillion (US$2.4 trillion) in the eurozone, nearly twice the €1.2 trillion worth of banknotes currently in circulation.

Economists argue that a CBDC should closely replicate cash, whereby digital tokens are held in private digital wallets, in order to avoid driving some users towards crypto. That option may not sit well with anti-money laundering rules, however, they noted.

Dolan further suggests that crypto’s recent explosion is partly due to an expected surge in adoption in the shadow economy, as CBDCs are developed and the decline of cash accelerates.

The Bahamas gets a card for its sand dollar national digital currency

The Bahamas is moving to make its national digital currency more accessible by launching a prepaid card for the “sand dollar.”

The Central Bank of The Bahamas has partnered with global payment giant Mastercard and local payment startup Island Pay to create a card that supports the sand dollar central bank digital currency.

According to a Wednesday announcement, the card is running under a new program from Mastercard and Island Pay, allowing users to convert the digital currency to traditional Bahamian dollars and pay for goods and services. The new card will be accepted for payments across the Caribbean region and other locations supporting Mastercard, the companies said.

The new solution is based on technology from Island Pay, a digital payment startup mainly operating across the Caribbean region. The company holds a license from the Central Bank of The Bahamas to operate as a payment service…

Mainframe-rebrand HiFi launches fixed-rate lending protocol

HiFi — the recent rebrand of onetime decentralized application platform Mainframe, which is focused on decentralized finance — announced today the launch of a fixed-rate DeFi lending platform.

“Fixed-rate lending is an important milestone for DeFi,” said HiFi CEO Doug Leonard in a press release. “Investors and traders need less-volatile options so that they can plan finances in advance, have predictability in expenses and hedge investments with certainty.”

The launch is scheduled for 5:00 pm UTC.

With a lending product, HiFi is entering into a marketplace featuring some stiff competition. Aave and Cream dominate with nearly $6 billion in total value locked between them, and top 10 protocol SushiSwap is planning a lending offering, BentoBox, for later in the year.

HiFi aims to stand out with a focus on tokenized debt and yield-bearing instruments as collateral. Yield-bearing instruments allow for the fixed rates HiFi advertises, in addition to enabling “the opportunity…

Bitcoin buys more gold than ever, with one ounce now costing under 0.035 BTC

Bitcoin (BTC) is now worth more in gold than at any time in its history as the largest cryptocurrency passes $50,000.

Data noted by markets commentator Holger Zschaepitz on Wednesday confirms that one ounce of gold now buys just 0.0352 BTC.

XAU/BTC plumbs new depths

Since hitting new all-time highs on Wednesday, the price of gold in Bitcoin terms became even cheaper, with one ounce costing $1,794, or 0.0349 BTC, at the time of writing.

“Bitcoin is eating gold in one chart!” Zschaepitz declared in comments.

Responding, analytics account Ecoinometrics added that gold’s underperformance versus Bitcoin simply increases if longer time frames are taken into account.

Bitcoin’s one-year risk-adjusted returns topped 270%, compared with 24% for gold, as of Dec. 28, 2020. Four-year returns contain an even starker contrast, with 2,675% versus 64% for Bitcoin and gold, respectively.

Why the US Needs Bitcoin

The United States will adopt bitcoin as a reserve asset.

Why? Because it is unequivocally in U.S. strategic interests to do so.

Alex Treece is a co-founder at Zabo, a platform enabling fintechs and financial services companies to easily connect cryptocurrency accounts to their applications.

The question is not if this will happen, but when. Whether it happens within 12 months, two years, five years or 10 years will have major implications for U.S. positioning for decades. Failure to embrace bitcoin sooner rather than later will damage U.S. strategic interests and benefit rivals adopting it first.

By examining how the U.S. and other countries manage their reserve assets today, we can already see the logic for this transition to occur.

First Mover: What’s Next After Bitcoin Hits $50K? Another $1K Gain

Bitcoin’s momentum carried through overnight, pushing upward to a new all-time high above $51,000 just a day after passing $50,000 for the first time.

“It’s not exactly soaring, as it has with other major technical breakouts, but another 3% gain isn’t to be sniffed at,” Craig Erlam, senior market analyst for the foreign exchange broker OANDA, wrote in an email.

In traditional markets, investors were focused on the recent rise in the U.S. Treasury yields to a 12-month high around 1.3% – taken as a sign that bond traders are growing more concerned about future inflation as the economy makes a fuller recovery. Bond yields sometimes rise when there’s a greater chance of inflation, since investors want the extra income as compensation for the extra risk.

Bitcoin’s Price Volatility May Hamper Its Progress Above $50K, JPMorgan Says

Bitcoin’s price volatility needs to subside for the cryptocurrency to continue its stellar rally, according to analysts at investment banking giant JPMorgan.

In a note on Tuesday reported by Reuters, the analysts drew attention to bitcoin‘s high volatility relative to gold, the classic inflation hedge, as an obstacle to significant gains beyond current levels around $51,000.

“Bitcoin’s three-month realized volatility, or actual price moves, is 87% versus 16% for gold – an asset, proponents say it could threaten,” the investment bank said.

While bitcoin is increasingly described as “digital gold,” skeptics believe the cryptocurrency is too volatile to find wide acceptance in institutional portfolios. Even so, several publicly listed companies such as Tesla and MicroStrategy have diversified cash holdings into bitcoin over recent months.
