Top Analyst Issues Altcoin Warning, Says Painful Correction Coming if Bitcoin Drops Below This Level

A popular crypto analyst says Bitcoin’s bearish price action could place a number of altcoins in a world of hurt in the short term.

In a new strategy session on the crypto markets, Michaël van de Poppe says he’s watching closely to see if BTC bulls can bring the top cryptocurrency back above $58,000.

“You can point towards the $58,000 high. If that can’t really break and become support again, I’m assuming we’re going to have a further downwards move.”

In order to prevent that much larger move to the downside, Van de Poppe says the price of Bitcoin needs to hold an important support level at the $55,100 mark.

If BTC remains below that number, the analyst says altcoins that recently experienced big rallies will be especially vulnerable.

“If $55,000 does not provide support, I think the overall momentum that we just saw on altcoins with Chiliz (CHZ), Enjin (ENJ), Theta (THETA) – all those coins are going to have a very painful correction.

And a painful correction would mean that they can slam them down 50% to 60%.”

In the long-run, Van de Poppe remains bullish on the markets. He characterizes Bitcoin’s current retracement as a “happy correction” and a healthy part of an overall crypto bull market cycle.

High priced $80K Bitcoin options signal pro traders expect more upside

Betting on an $80,000 Bitcoin call options for June doesn’t seem outrageous given BTC’s bullish performance over the past few weeks. This was not the case a couple of months ago when BTC peaked at $42,000 on Jan. 8 and subsequently dropped to the $30,000 level.

At that time, a 150% upside was needed from the $32,000 price on Jan. 26, and this seemed quite far-fetched. Therefore, the June $80,000 BTC call (buy) options traded at Deribit for $2,240, or 0.07 BTC.

Less than two months later, as BTC reached $61,700 on March 13, the same call option peaked at BTC 0.15, or $9,255. That’s a 3x gain in less than seven weeks. Keep in mind that despite the 93% rally to $61,700, an additional 30% upside was needed to reach the $80,000 strike.

Institutional investors have continued to pump money into cryptocurrency investment products in Q1 of this year, according to a report by CoinShares. The inflows of $4.2 billion in the first quarter have broken the previous record of $3.9 billion made in the fourth quarter of 2020.

NYDIG CEO Robby Gutmann recently told listeners of the “On the Brink” podcast to brace for a slew of announcements by the firm’s strategic partners. Gutmann said the announcements could bring new levels of “Bitcoin adoption, Bitcoin availability, Bitcoin products and services within the existing traditional financial landscape.”

While new products and services that may attract fresh investors are a positive sign, traders should also keep an eye on the price of Bitcoin (BTC). In a bull market, every positive development is cheered by a sharp rise in price.

US-based crypto users likely still have to pay taxes on NFTs, says CNBC

Tax season is almost upon crypto users based in the United States, and even if they plan on keeping their assets digital, nonfungible token — or NFT — buyers might not get off scot-free.

According to a CNBC report today, people who use the profits from their crypto holdings to purchase NFTs will likely still have to pay capital gains tax up to 20% when filing their U.S. taxes.

“Collectors who are buying NFTs with their cryptocurrency gains could face large tax bills this year for deals that most probably thought were tax free,” said CNBC’s Robert Frank. “The IRS considers crypto a capital asset, not a currency, and if you exchange crypto for any other asset, you immediately recognize a capital gain or loss.”

Frank claimed that “Most platforms that sell NFTs are not reporting to the IRS” despite many of the popular auction houses having offices…

Strong fundamentals push Dego Finance, Orbs and Harmony (ONE) price higher

Bitcoin (BTC) has continued to challenge the status of legacy markets as the market capitalization of the digital asset surpassed the combined market cap of Visa and Mastercard ($871 billion). Bitcoin’s $1.15 trillion market capitalization has also overtaken the combined value of JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, which are the world’s three largest banks.

As Bitcoin gains in size and sustains it, several new institutional investors are likely to jump on the crypto bandwagon. Additionally, traditional businesses are closely watching the decentralized finance space and the rising popularity of nonfungible tokens. British-American auction house Sotheby’s recently said that it will join the nonfungible tokens party by offering tokenized art by a creator named “Pak.” This move could further boost interest in the NFT space.

A little bit of history repeating? The numbers behind Bitcoin’s bull run

The idea of market cycles is widely accepted in finance. The most basic principle is that what goes up must come down. The underlying rationale is that investors will accumulate when prices are low, causing prices to rise. As the price reaches a peak, sell pressure will take over as holders seek to cash out, thereby pushing the price back down.

If you bought Bitcoin (BTC) in 2017 or earlier, this will sound eerily familiar. It essentially describes what happened during the last bull run when BTC hit a high of $20,000. Therefore, most crypto holders are watching the current market conditions with bated breath.

But so far, apart from a few corrections, prices have held, or at least swiftly regained the losses. What are the chances it will continue? Can we expect 2021 to play out similarly to 2017 and early 2018, or is the cycle of the current…
