The average price of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has fallen from its all-time high, weeks after the digital collectibles craze took a euphoric turn.

Bloomberg reports that the average price of NFTs has plunged by 67% from a record high of $4,300 in February 2021 to about $1,400.

NFTs are digital tokens that have unique cryptographic properties which enable the blockchain to verify the originality and ownership of digital assets including artworks, parcels of virtual lands, and collectibles.

Interest in NFTs has reached its apex last month when digital artist Beeple sold his artwork dubbed “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” for a record price of $69,346,250 at Christie’s auction house.

Celebrities also jumped on the bandwagon with rapper Snoop Dogg unveiling a collection of non-fungible tokens labeled “A Journey with Dogg” and Grammy-award winner The Weeknd launching his own NFT collection that includes limited edition artwork and new music.

Ari Paul, CIO of blockchain and crypto investment firm BlockTower Capital, warns that the entire NFT market is in the midst of a bubble.

“It’s simultaneously a bubble and a game-changer, like the internet in 1999 or Bitcoin in 2017. In my opinion, existing NFT valuations are a bubble *and* total value of all NFTs will be 100x here in 5 years.”

Celer (CELR), Cartesi (CTSI) and Compound (COMP) rally as DeFi heats up

Bitcoin bulls are still struggling to push the price to a new high but the positive sign is that BTC has not corrected sharply in the past few days and the top-ranked cryptocurrency has held a market capitalization above $1 trillion since March 26.

While many are wondering what Bitcoin’s next move will be, a Bloomberg Intelligence report by senior commodity strategist Mike McGlone projects that BTC will rally to $80,000 in the second quarter rather than slump to the $40,000 level.

Real-world data comes to NFTs as street artists geotag their work

A Latvian artist going only by the name of Kiwie has announced their intention to release more than a thousand nonfungible tokens that represent real-world street art.

According to a statement from Kiwie, the NFT pieces will allow art connoisseurs to physically own street art without removing the brick wall, sidewalk or other infrastructure to which it was applied. The NFTs feature 3D renderings of the artist’s “Fat Monster” character spray painted in 1,001 real-world locations with corresponding geotags.

“Using NFTs to represent ownership allows to maintain the beauty of the art intact,” said Kiwie. “Blockchain is not just a buzzword here, it legitimately enables something that used to be impossible.”

Kiwie plans to drop five NFTs for existing street art pieces starting April 13 on the marketplace Rarible. The artist intends to schedule additional drops periodically over the next five years. According to Kiwie’s website, the artist

Paxos applies for clearing license with SEC following successful pilot tests

Paxos, a United States-based stablecoin operator, announced Tuesday that it will apply for a formal clearing agency license with the Securities and Exchange Commission in a move that would bring another practical use case for blockchain technology in traditional markets.

As Reuters reported, the pursuit of an agency license by Paxos follows a successful pilot test of its same-day settlement system. Credit Suisse, a Zurich-based financial institution; and Instinet, the trading arm of Nomura Holdings Inc, participated in the pilot by settling U.S.-listed stock trades on the same day.

Paxos says the trades represented the first live application of blockchain technology for U.S. equities. It currently takes two days to settle a trade for equity markets in the United States. Efforts to shorten this time have gained traction in the wake of the GameStop saga.

Entities must register with the U.S. securities regulator…

CoinMarketCap removes South Korea crypto exchanges from Bitcoin price tracker

Crypto price tracking website CoinMarketCap has removed many South Korean exchanges from its calculations for the price of Bitcoin as the coin dipped under $58,000 again.

As of today, CoinMarketCap’s Bitcoin (BTC) price tracker shows no data from major South Korean crypto exchanges including Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone and Korbit. The website uses data from many exchanges to estimate the average price for cryptocurrencies. At the time of publication, the price of Bitcoin is $57,721, having fallen more than 2% this morning.

Speaking to Cointelegraph, CoinMarketCap content manager Molly Jane Zuckerman said the removal was due to the premium observed on crypto exchanges based in South Korea. The crypto analytics provider estimate the BTC price to be roughly 6% higher than that on other exchanges.

“If the prices on South Korean exchanges stabilize, then we will add the data back in, but that hasn’t happened yet,” said Zuckerman.

The last time…

$2.52B in bearish Bitcoin options signal pro traders are hedging their bets

Bitcoin (BTC) has been trying to break the $60,000 resistance for the past 23 days. Generally, investors don’t seem too worried about this as they consider it a healthy consolidation period, and even recent analysis from JPMorgan Chase estimates that BTC price will reach $130,000

Even as most investors expect Bitcoin price to rise above $100,000, derivatives data shows $2.52 billion worth of ultra-bearish options from the $40,000 to $50,000 range?

At the moment, there are multiple signals that the crypto market is overheating. There is an 11% BTC price premium in South Korean markets, and this week Cointelegraph reported that there are 100 cryptocurrencies with a $1 billion market capitalization.

As a comparison, just two months ago, this figure stood at 51. The combined altcoin market capitalization surged to $800 billion from $450 billion in 60 days. Thus, buying protective put options makes sense, especially during these…

Crypto lobby groups are gaining traction in Washington as the threat of regulatory bottleneck looms

Crypto-focused lobby groups in Washington, D.C. are playing an increasingly vital role in reorienting policymakers away from the view that virtual currencies are used primarily for illegal transactions. Now, they are preparing for potentially their biggest battle yet.

Blockchain Association, an industry trade group representing crypto firms, has added ten members to its brass since December 2020, bringing its total to 34. Kristin Smith, the group’s executive director, told Bloomberg that her members are extremely concerned about federal regulators clamping down on the industry over misplaced fears.

“We in the industry think it’s hugely problematic,” she said, adding that, “it misses the entire point of this innovation.”

Smith was commenting on recent proposals by the Financial Action Task Force and Treasury Department to increase surveillance of the cryptocurrency market over concerns about money laundering and other illicit activities. The proposals, which could be finalized later this year,…
