SEC, CFTC Announce Joint Summit; “Jurisdictional Silos” to End

Washington Signals End to Regulatory Turf War

The era of regulation by enforcement may be officially winding down. In a joint statement Friday, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced a public summit aimed at dismantling the “legacy jurisdictional silos” that have plagued the U.S. crypto sector for a decade. Scheduled for January 27 at CFTC headquarters, the event, titled “SEC-CFTC Harmonization: U.S. Financial Leadership in the Crypto Era” will feature a fireside chat between SEC Chair Paul S. Atkins and CFTC Chair Michael S. Selig.

The announcement explicitly frames the summit as a corrective measure to deliver on administration promises to center the crypto economy in the U.S. “For too long, market participants have been forced to navigate regulatory boundaries that are unclear in application and misaligned in design,” the agencies wrote in a joint release. The event will be livestreamed, signaling a pivot toward transparency after years of closed-door Wells notices.

Institutional Thaw: The Data

The rhetoric aligns with a sharp statistical shift in enforcement behavior. Throughout 2025, the SEC closed 29 crypto-related cases while opening only 13 new actions, a dramatic reduction from the aggressive cadence of 2024. This de-escalation suggests the Atkins-Selig summit is not merely a photo op, but the public formalization of a policy shift already visible in the docket.

“This event will build on our broader harmonization efforts to ensure that innovation takes root on American soil, under American law,” Joint Statement from Chairs Atkins and Selig

Legislative Context

While the agencies move toward alignment, legislative hurdles remain. The summit announcement comes just days after the Senate Banking Committee postponed its markup of the CLARITY Act, citing disagreements over stablecoin yield structures. The impending dialogue between Atkins and Selig, moderated by journalist Eleanor Terrett, is expected to bridge the gap between this stalled legislation and the immediate need for market guidance.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday. No registration is required for the livestream.
