Delaware Life Insurance Company announced today the integration of Bitcoin exposure into its fixed index annuity (FIA) portfolio, marking the first time a US insurer has offered a cryptocurrency-linked index within a principal-protected retirement product. The move utilizes the newly launched "BlackRock U.S. Equity Bitcoin Balanced Risk 12% Index" to provide regulated access to digital assets for conservative savers.
The Structure: Capped Volatility, Protected Principal
The product resolves the primary friction for risk-averse retirees: Bitcoin’s volatility. Instead of direct ownership, the annuity tracks a hybrid index composed of US equities, cash, and the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). The strategy employs a volatility control mechanism, dynamically adjusting allocations to target a 12% annualized volatility level.
This structure allows policyholders to capture a portion of Bitcoin’s upside while maintaining the FIA’s core guarantee: zero loss of principal due to market performance. The index is now available across three of Delaware Life’s flagship products: Momentum Growth, Momentum Growth Plus, and DualTrack Income.
Institutional Validation
The partnership with BlackRock signals a shift in how insurers view digital asset risk. Robert Mitchnick, BlackRock’s Global Head of Digital Assets, noted the product was built to meet specific insurance client demand for "measured" exposure.
"This launch builds around the tremendous success and client demand we have seen for IBIT, enabling insurance clients to now add bitcoin exposure as part of a broader indexed annuity strategy."
While Bitcoin traded softly at $89,500 (-3.8%) during the Tuesday session, the announcement highlights the asset class’s deepening entrenchment in traditional finance infrastructure. This is distinct from previous insurer activity, such as MassMutual’s 2020 purchase of Bitcoin for its general investment account; Delaware Life is productizing exposure directly for the retail annuity market.
