Crypto ‘Wrench Attack’ Ring Dismantled in Spain After Murder of Dutch Investor

Operation Lambo/Urus Ends Deadly Kidnapping Spree

A joint task force led by Spain’s Policía Nacional and Danish authorities has dismantled a cross-border criminal network behind the kidnapping and murder of a 37-year-old Dutch crypto investor. The operation, code-named ‘Lambo/Urus’, resulted in five arrests in Málaga and Madrid, with four additional suspects charged in Denmark.

Authorities confirmed the investigation began in April after the victim and his partner were ambushed in Mijas, Málaga. The assailants, armed with firearms and dressed in black, shot the man in the leg before abducting the couple to a safe house. While the woman was released hours later, the male victim was held until he surrendered access to his digital wallets. His body was later discovered in a wooded area, showing signs of extreme physical violence beyond the initial gunshot wound.

The gang successfully transferred approximately €78,000 ($82,000) in two separate transactions before killing the victim.

The ‘Wrench Attack’ Vector

Physical violence against keyholders, colloquially termed a ‘wrench attack’, is bypassing on-chain security measures. In this case, the perpetrators did not exploit a smart contract; they exploited biological vulnerability. Police seized two firearms (one real, one simulated), a baton, and blood-stained clothing from six properties raided in Spain. The investigation revealed the group specifically targeted the victim for his high-profile lifestyle, which included a Lamborghini Urus that gave the police operation its name.

Cross-Border Manhunt

The network operated with high mobility between Spain and Denmark. Two of the four suspects charged in Denmark were already incarcerated for similar offenses, indicating a specialized recidivist cell. Spanish officers recovered biological traces at the safe house that matched the suspects, solidifying the link between the physical kidnapping and the digital theft.
