Moonbeam’s PureStake raises $6M ahead of parachain launch on Polkadot

PureStake, the company behind the Moonbeam and Moonriver networks, two parachain candidates for Polkadot and Kusama, respectively, announced a successful $6 million raise.

The funding round was led by CoinFund and included participants such as Binance Labs, ParaFi, Coinbase Ventures, Fenbushi Capital, IOSG Ventures. Some previous seed investors, who had funded the project in September 2020, also joined. These include investors like the Polkadot-centric Hypersphere Ventures, Hashkey, Arrington XRP, A195, KR1, D1 Ventures, Mechanism Capital, Divergence Ventures, and Signum Capital.

The latest PureStake round comes as the Polkadot ecosystem starts gearing up for parachain auctions. Though most parachain candidate projects initially expected a release between Q1 and Q2 of this year, Moonbeam is planning for a Q3 2021 launch. The parachain auction process will be first conducted on Kusama, where Moonbeam is launching a sister network called Moonriver, with auctions on the main Polkadot chain expected soon afterwards.

Moonbeam positions itself as the “Ethereum on Polkadot” chain, looking to closely mirror the Ethereum environment while benefiting from interoperability with the rest of the Polkadot ecosystem. Though many parachains have since added support for the Ethereum Virtual Machine, Moonbeam focuses on the rest of the Ethereum ecosystem, supporting the same addresses, wallets and development tools.

Derek Yoo, CEO of PureStake, told Cointelegraph that the investment will be deployed for further development work and business expansion. Though he noted that the “we have the core Ethereum compatibility work basically done,” there will still be continuous development work required to “develop further features, integrations and capabilities over time.” On the business side, the funding will serve to attract “additional marketing resources and funding our expansion to Asia,” Yoo added.

Moonbeam is currently working with some Ethereum DeFi projects to port their projects to the new chain. According to Moonbeam, candidates include SushiSwap, Balancer, IDEX, Ocean Protocol and others.

Bitcoin market cap exceeds Canada’s M1 money supply once again

Another day of gains for Bitcoin (BTC) has seen the price of the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization go beyond the $1.1 trillion mark — $1.105 trillion to be precise.

This market capitalization growth now means that Bitcoin’s market size has surpassed Canada’s M1 money supply which stands at $1.104 trillion, according to data from CEIC.

At the present figure, Bitcoin’s market capitalization is also greater than the M1 money supply of the Australian dollar, which currently stands at $1.079 trillion.

By exceeding Australia and Canada, Bitcoin’s market capitalization is once again large enough to make BTC appear in the top 10 “stock of narrow money” rankings.

M1, or narrow money, refers to the total supply of physical currency in circulation as well as traveler’s checks and other forms of demand deposits held by non-banking institutions, public firms and private…

Scottish music school accepts cryptocurrency as payment for lessons

A Scottish music school will begin accepting cryptocurrency for tuition payments following demand from students, it was announced this week. The Morningside School of Music in Edinburgh said it was responding to suggestions from adult pupils in the school, many of whom now work in the city’s burgeoning fintech sector.

Morningside’s director, Linda Boyd, said the school had previously used cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) to make business purchases and could see the utility in accepting it as a form of payment.

She said, “We sometimes use things like Bitcoin to pay for goods for the school, so we know how fast and easy it is and want our music students to be able to do the same.”

Boyd said the school’s decision to accept cryptocurrency was an example of a small business following the recent example set by large businesses, adding…

ConsenSys announces layer-two NFT platform, Palm, to compete with Flow

With a possible billion-dollar nonfungible token drop and a high-powered, multiproject collaboration in the works, the Ethereum ecosystem may finally be ready to compete with NFT-centric blockchain Flow.

In a press release today, Ethereum software developer ConsenSys announced Palm, an environmentally friendly NFT scaling solution. Palm will be a sidechain designed to be “fully connected” to Ethereum, sporting faster settlement times, lower fees and an especially light carbon footprint — a noted bugaboo for artists as of late.

Ethereum’s community — one of the chain’s advantages over the faster, more efficient rival NFT chain Flow — is also on full display in the release. ConsenSys announced a lineup of ecosystem-building partner powerhouses for Palm, such as NFT social media platform Nifty’s and experimental NFT mining project Meme.

Likewise, Palm will come out of the gate with significant infrastructure in place from partners Infura, NFT metadata storage via Protocol Labs, and a…
