JPMorgan Moves JPM Coin to ‘Bank-Backed’ Canton Network

JPMorgan Chase has expanded its digital asset infrastructure, announcing that its blockchain unit, Kinexys (formerly Onyx), will issue the JPM Coin (JPMD) directly on the Canton Network. This marks the bank’s second major deployment to a public-permissioned environment, following the token’s deployment on Base in November 2025.

The Institutional Pivot

While the Base integration targeted broader interoperability with Ethereum’s ecosystem, the Canton move is a pure institutional play. The network, developed by Digital Asset, creates a "network of networks" specifically designed for regulated assets. It allows competitors like Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, and BNY Mellon to transact on a shared ledger without exposing proprietary trade data.

Naveen Mallela, Global Co-head of Kinexys, framed the move as a liquidity play rather than a mere technical upgrade:

"The collaboration moves the industry forward in transacting on public blockchains. Bringing JPM Coin onto Canton further increases efficiency and unlocks liquidity."

Privacy as the Prerequisite

The core driver here is Canton’s "configurable privacy." Unlike standard public chains where transaction history is often transparent, Canton utilizes the Daml smart contract language to ensure data is visible only to the counterparties involved. For a bank moving trillions in daily volume, this obfuscation is not a feature. It is a regulatory requirement.

Integration will occur in phases throughout 2026, beginning with the technical framework for minting and redeeming JPMD. The end state envisions a seamless flow of tokenized deposits between the bank’s private ledger and Canton’s broader institutional ecosystem, effectively creating a 24/7 settlement layer for the world’s largest banks.
